DESCRIPTION:Carmen J. Marsit\, PhD is Executive Associate Dean for Faculty
Affairs and Research Strategy\, Rollins Distinguished Professor of Research
\, and Professor in the Gangarosa Department of Environmental Health and De
partment of Epidemiology at the Rollins School of Public Health of Emory Un
iversity. He leads a multi-disciplinary research program focused on underst
anding the impacts of the pre- and perinatal environments on maternal and c
hild health\, utilizing the tools of genomics\, epigenomics\, and bioinform
atics to uncover mechanisms underlying the impact of the environment on hea
lth within epidemiologic studies. His current projects are examining the im
pacts of maternal structural\, psychosocial\, and chemical exposures on the
transcriptomes and epigenomes of the placenta in populations in the United
States and in Thailand. Dr. Marsit serves as Director of the NIEHS-funded
Emory HERCULES Exposome Research Center and Training Program in the Environ
mental Health Sciences and Toxicology.\n\nTitle of Talk: Using the Placenta
to Study the Exposome of Children’s Health\n\n \n\nThe placenta plays crit
ical roles in the process of development\, and its functions can be examine
d using molecular profiling techniques. In this seminar\, we will discuss t
he evidence of the importance of the placenta on newborn and early life chi
ldren’s health and the ways in which genetic variation and the environment
influence placenta’s function in programming children’s health and its util
ity to understand the in utero experience of the developing fetus.\n\n \n\n
