Dr. Robert Rock serves as the clinical director for the Bureau of Bronx Neighborhood Health within the New York City Department of Health. Robert is a practicing family physician, health services researcher, and health professional educator dedicated to using medicine as a means to social justice. His work exists at the intersection of interdisciplinary health professions education, clinical medicine, and public health, developing initiatives that realize structures conducive to flourishing for historically oppressed groups. He received his BA in Art History from New York University, his MD from the Yale School of Medicine, and his Masters in Health Sciences through the National Clinician Scholars program. Dr. Rock also leads the Social Mission Alliance's Health Justice Fellowship program and serves as senior advisor within the Program for Humanities in Medicine at the Yale School of Medicine. Robert has been named a top 40 under 40 Leader in Health in 2020 by the National Minority Quality Forum, a 2020 Rising Star for Excellence for Social Mission in Health Professions Education by the Josiah Macy Jr. Foundation, and a 2026 Atlantic Fellow for Heath Equity.

Title of Talk: The Healing A.R.C.: The Legacy of Lincoln Detox & the Enduring Struggle for Self-Determination

The presentation will provide an update and review of the first phase of the NYC Health Department’s Lincoln Detox Center (LDC) Healing Acknowledgement, Redress, & Closure (ARC) project to understand the history of the LDC and its impact on the South Bronx Community. This work is pursuant to the 2021 NYC Board of Health Resolution declaring Racism a Public Health Crisis and mandate for the “NYC Health Department to research, clarify, and acknowledge examples of its historic role in divesting and underinvesting in critical community-led health programs, and participate in a truth and reconciliation process with communities harmed by these actions when possible”.
