DESCRIPTION:The Terry F. Davies Distinguished Professorship Series\, hosted
by the Institute for Translational Medicine and Pharmacology at the Icahn
School of Medicine at Mount Sinai\, is proud to welcome E. Dale Abel\, MB
BS\, DPhil\, for a lecture on "Cardiometabolic Disease: A Mitochondrial Pe
rspective." Dr. Abel is the William S. Adams Distinguished Professor of Me
dicine and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the David Geffen School
of Medicine\, UCLA\, and Executive Medical Director of UCLA Health. He gra
duated with distinction from the University of the West Indies School of M
edicine\, earned his DPhil from Oxford University as a Rhodes Scholar\, an
d completed training in internal medicine at Northwestern University and i
n endocrinology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center\, Harvard Medical
School. Dr. Abel has made seminal contributions to understanding the role
of altered mitochondrial metabolism in the pathophysiology of diabetic car
diomyopathy\, and his laboratory has elucidated critical roles for insulin
and IGF1 signaling in cardiac health and disease. He is an elected member
of the National Academy of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences\
, and is past President of both the Endocrine Society and the Association
of Professors of Medicine. \n\n \n\nThe Terry F. Davies Distinguished Prof
essorship Series is held annually in honor of Dr. Terry F. Davies' long an
d distinguished record of significant contributions to our knowledge of en
docrine physiology and pathology. Dr. Davies is the Florence and Theodore
Baumritter Professor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount
Sinai\, where he has spent most of his career advancing research in autoim
mune thyroid disease and endocrine physiology. Initiated in 2023\, this le

egacy by bringing the world's foremost biomedical scientists to Mount Sina
i to share their discoveries and inspire the next generation of researcher
 s and clinicians.
