Steve Auerbach grew up in New York City and received his MD and MPH from Columbia University, completed a residency and boarded in pediatrics at UCLA. He then started a career as a medical epidemiologist with the U.S. Public Health Service, first with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta and overseas in Micronesia; and then with the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) back in New York. Having reached the U.S. Public Health Service mandatory 30-year retirement, he now holds volunteer positions for groups such as Physicians for a National Health Program-NY, American Academy of Pediatrics-District II/New York State, Health Justice for NY, Health Justice for New York, and One Payer States
Title of Talk: Single Payer in the context of US Healthcare System and Race/Class Disparities
We will review how 45 years of neoliberal economic and political policy choices have led to where the U.S. healthcare system is now, in the comparative context of peer countries and internal race and class disparities, and how single payer financing works and is necessary, albeit not sufficient, fix.
