The Friedman Brain Institute and the Office of Gender Equity present a special screening event and moderated discussion of The Mask You Live In.

The Mask You Live In is a feature-length documentary that follows a diverse group of boys and young men as they struggle to stay true to themselves while negotiating America’s narrow definition of masculinity. Pressured by the media, their peer group, and even the adults in their lives, our protagonists confront messages encouraging them to disconnect from their emotions, devalue authentic friendships, objectify and degrade women, and resolve conflicts through violence. These gender stereotypes interconnect with race, class, and circumstance, creating a maze of identity issues boys and young men must navigate to become “real” men. Experts in neuroscience, psychology, sociology, sports, education, and media also weigh in, offering empirical evidence of the “boy crisis” and tactics to combat it.

The Screening: The film will be available for viewing from December 4-10th, 2020. In advance of the viewing, we will email you a link to a screening room where you'll be able to access the film to watch at your convenience. Click here to pre-order to watch the film and you will need to use the password ‘ICAHN’ in order to register. You will not need the password to watch the film, only to pre-order.
Moderated Discussion: On December 10th, from 3-4 p.m., we will host a virtual moderated discussion on the film, giving us the opportunity to come together and reflect on the narratives showcased in the story as well as our own experiences.
