"The Genomic Medicine Mandate and the Next Frontier of Preventive Cardiology"

Abstract:
Ischemic heart disease is the leading cause of death for both men and women in the U.S. and globally. Current preventive guidelines focus on identifying and treating patients using clinical risk factors. Yet, this approach fails to identify young patients who suffer from early events before their risk becomes clinically apparent. We need a new strategy. Genomic risk assessment offers hope for early identification of high risk individuals, allowing for targeted applications of primordial and primary prevention. The development of effective and equitable polygenic risk scores for coronary artery disease is a critical first step. I will discuss my current and future efforts to address this need.

Speaker:
Shoa Clarke, MD, PhD is a preventive cardiologist and Instructor at Stanford School of Medicine. He graduated from Stanford School of Medicine, where he also obtained his PhD in genetics. He completed residency training in internal medicine and pediatrics at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and Boston Children’s Hospital before returning to Stanford for fellowship training in cardiology. He cares for adults, children, and families with familial hypercholesterolemia or other risk factors for early cardiovascular disease. His research is focused on understanding the genetic basis of cardiovascular disease risk in hopes of developing effective strategies for precision medicine and prevention.
