Ryan W. Walker, PhD is an Assistant Professor in the department of Environmental Medicine and Public Health at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. He is a clinical obesity and type 2 diabetes scientist with expertise in clinical nutrition, exercise physiology and the genetics of metabolic disorders. He has extensive experience in clinical interventions. Dr. Walker is currently studying the early establishment of the infant gut microbiome and the role of intestinal bacteria in the etiology of obesity and related diseases. He has particular interests in the relationships between environmental factors (diet), microbiome and host health and the identification of modifiers of the gut microbiome to establish targets for interventions that improve health outcomes and prevent disease.
Title of Talk: Incorporating individual physiology and metabolic function measures into exposure research
Strong associations exist between environmental exposures and multiple cardiometabolic health outcomes. Yet, many mechanisms by which these exposures negatively impact health remain unknown. This will be an introduction to the gold standard measures that the MSSM Human Metabolism and Physiology Lab currently offers with examples of how these outcomes could be incorporated into environmental exposure research. Understanding individual metabolic responses to an exposure can shed light on mechanisms of action, help advance personalized approaches to mitigate disease risk and aid in identifying at-risk populations for interventions.
