Dr. Chanelle Diaz is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at Columbia University and a board-certified general internist in New York City. She serves as Medical Director for Internal Medicine Primary Care at NewYork-Presbyterian/Columbia University's Ambulatory Care Network and the Charles Rangel Community Health Center and also directs the Adult Community Health Worker Program at the Center for Community Health Navigation.
A graduate of Williams College, she earned her MD and MPH from the University of Miami and completed residency in Primary Care and Social Internal Medicine at Montefiore. Dr. Diaz’s work centers on community-led approaches to immigrant health inequities. She volunteers with Physicians for Human Rights and New York Lawyers for the Public Interest Medical Providers Network, conducting forensic evaluations for immigrants in detention. Dr. Diaz has published widely on the health harms of immigration detention and helps train the next generation of human rights physicians.

Imprisoned and Imperiled: Immigration Detention as a Public Health Crisis Immigration detention represents a critical but underrecognized public health issue. This grand rounds will examine immigration status as a structural determinant of health, review evidence on the physical and mental health consequences of detention on individuals and communities, and discuss practical opportunities for advocacy and policy engagement.
