About Cathy Nonas
Cathy Nonas is the creator of Meals For Good, Inc, a non-profit that distributes vouchers for independent supermarkets through local community-based organizations in NYC. A clinical dietitian by training, she spent her early years at the federally funded NYC Obesity Research Center where she was Administrator of their outpatient programs, after which she moved to North General Hospital in East Harlem, where she was Director of Obesity and Diabetes outpatient programs and assistant clinical professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
Nonas was a senior advisor at the NYC Health Department and the Director of Nutrition and Physical Activity programs. Nonas was a member of the National Institute of Health Committee to update both the Obesity and Lifestyle guidelines. She has many peer-reviewed publications on obesity and policy strategies for improving the nutrition and physical activity environments in NYC. Her policy work includes developing New York City’s calorie-posting regulation, directing the NYC Green Cart initiative which increased the number of mobile food vendors selling fresh produce in high-poverty neighborhoods, and growing the country’s largest municipal farmers market incentive, Health Bucks. Nonas is currently a Fellow at NYU’s McSilver Institute for Poverty, Policy and Research.
About the Annual Lecture
This Annual Lecture is in honor of Barbara Brenner, DrPH, MSW, in her role as the first Director of Community Relations in 1985. Dr. Brenner was a pioneer in building meaningful and collaborative partnerships with community leaders to reduce health inequities. She was a tireless community advocate and mentor, known for her diplomacy, humanity, and love for East Harlem. This program brings together community partners to reflect on ways we can continue her legacy.

This lecture is sponsored by the Department of Environmental Medicine, the Center on Health and Environment Across the LifeSpan (HEALS), and ConduITS—the Clinical and Translational Science Award (CTSA) Program for the Mount Sinai Health System.
