Dr. Jonathan D. Essoka is an avid urban environmental engineer/scientist with an interest in promoting equity and sustainability in disadvantaged communities. He serves as ORD’s Superfund & Technology Liaison to Region 3. In this position, he provides innovative technological solutions for contaminated site project managers and promotes research science to the regional office as a tool to address program issues. In addition to his technical support duties, Dr. Essoka regularly contributes to several, varied research projects, which include community environmental health assessments, contaminated site tool development, brownfields revitalization, local perceptions of water quality, cumulative impacts on communities and the intersection of contaminated sites with ecosystem goods and services. He consistently approaches his regulatory and research responsibilities with an Environmental Justice lens. Dr. Essoka holds a doctorate in Environmental Science from Drexel University, a Master of Science in Environmental Engineering from Tulane University and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering from the University of Pennsylvania.
Title of Talk: EPA’s Office of Research and Development – Cumulative Impacts and Environmental Justice Research Efforts
The presentation will briefly cover ORD’s structure and research programs. It will then provide an overview of steps it is taking to address cumulative impacts and Environmental Justice research using a current example. Additionally, it will describe a novel community-based research initiative focused on EPA Region 2 states and territories.
