Title: Economic Prosperity and Cardiovascular Health
Abstract: After a decline in cardiovascular mortality for non-elderly US adults, recent stagnation has occurred alongside rising income inequality. Whether this is associated with underlying economic trends is unclear. In a recent study, published in JAMA in February 2021, we studied the association between change in county-level markers of economic prosperity and cardiovascular mortality among middle-aged US adults from 2010 to 2017. After accounting for baseline prosperity and demographic and healthcare related variables, an increase in economic prosperity was associated with a small, but significant, decrease in annual cardiovascular mortality rates.
