Thursday, September 15, 2022 3pm to 4pm
Michelle Tran, Founder/President of Soar Over Hate and 5th-Year MD/PhD Candidate at Mount Sinai presents: “Anti-Asian Hate: A Public Health Crisis".
Join Michelle for a deep dive into how the recent escalation in anti-Asian hate crimes during the COVID-19 pandemic has impacted New York City (NYC)’s Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities. She started her non-profit, Soar Over Hate, in March 2021 to protect and uplift AAPI, particularly those elderly and low-income, in NYC and beyond. Soar Over Hate has donated over 31,000 personal safety devices through resource fairs, distributed over $14.5K in need-based scholarships to NYC AAPI youth, and offered free culturally competent mental health resources to the community. Through the lens of her work, Michelle will review how the model minority stereotype has invisibilized many struggles in the AAPI community, including anti-Asian racism, poverty, and psychological needs. She will also discuss the long-term impacts of hate crime incidents on victims and the community at large. Attendees will leave with more insights into the needs of NYC’s diverse AAPI immigrant communities as well as learn bystander intervention/situation de-escalation tools to feel better equipped about helping someone being harmed on the street.
